About Me

I graduated from the Naval Academy and joined the Nuclear Power program before serving on submarines (and the answer to the most-asked question is: “No, I didn’t hit my head all the time…).

However, I had a greater interest in financial markets than in launching missiles and torpedoes.

I started my career with a French bank as an energy commodity trader managing client price risk. From there I traded natural gas and derivatives, managed the energy desk for another bank and came to St. Louis to start the electricity trading floor for Ameren, the local utility.

After the Enron debacle, changes in the electricity market reduced the trading opportunities, so the logical next step was to go from submarines to commodity trading to…self-storage.

The Navy taught me that persistence pays off, and over time I built a successful group of self-storage properties in the St. Louis metro.

After 15 years, including time as President of the Missouri Storage Owners Assn, it was time to sell. My plan was to do a 1031 Exchange into other types of rental properties, which made sense but was a challenge to execute.

In the process I learned about Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs) and found that to be an excellent fit for my exit from self-storage.

Now I help others understand ALL their options when it comes to real estate transactions, whether it relates to 1031 Exchanges, DSTs, Tax Deferral Investments relating to real estate (OZs, renewable energy credits, ground conservation deals, etc.).

I also raise LP or GP equity, identify JV partners, and remove other impediments to progress.
